It is rather amazing to think that the very first item in the Rubber Panty Hall of Fam is not a pair of rubber panties or even a rubber babydoll, but a rubber sheet. and not even the traditional ivory colored or even pastel pink. Instead, it is a raspbaerry pink one. This is because it is an English one, and one of the first rubber sheets ever. It was used on Alice Liddell in 1865. She was the famous Alice in Wonderland. It is a clue to the real origin of the fantastic stories that we hear.

When Alice was 6, going on 7, she started wetting the bed. Her parents were in a tizzy as to what to do, At this time, the French were starting to use rubber for many things including very early raincapes. They were starting to be imported into England as well as rubber sheeting. Alice's parents heard of this material and its waterproof property so they got both raincapes and some sheeting to put in Alice's bed. Since they were fashion fanatics, the French colored this material and raspberry was very popular with the British importers so that is what the Liddells got. Many victorians enjoyed fondling this very smooth material which was a bit embarrassing to the stiff-upper-lip culture. One such was Alice since the idea of putting the rubber sheet under the bottom shee so the person did not lie directly on it and feel it had not yet come to be.

Alice's parents became concerned, thinking that this may lead to some bizarre French carnal interests that would be corruptive of the British character, they looked for ways to dissuade this. They instructed her nurse to "do something". So the lady did what she might. She took the 3 meter piece of material from under the bedclothes and laid it on the top of Alice's bed then laid Alice on it. She had an idea. Much of little girls' training involved some part of the chastity area. Nursie saw that little Alice was fondling the sheet that she lay on. She lifted Alice's dress, pulled off her under panties then took the bottom end of the material in her hand, pushed it up between Alice's legs and rubbed the material on her flower. At first Alice enjoyed this but in only a few seconds this turned to agony as the feeling became distractingly, then very umpleasantly strong, and humliation at hving her dress lifted and this kind of feeling inflicted on her added to things. Alice moaned and cried as the feeling grew until "something broke" inside of Alice, the feeling got a hundred times worse, her body violently twitched and wriggled uncontrollabley, she screamed horrifically and wet copiously, for which she was scolded, and sobbed and whimpered pathetically. Then the Nurse said "This will be done to you every day until even looking at the material makes you recall this feeling as if it were being done to you right there and there. No little girl under my care will become a French trollop" and for the next two weeks, every day, the rubber sheet was pulled from the bed, used on Alice in this way, often being put on her like a full body diaper a few hours before her "Nurse thing" was done to her to make her feel it longer whcih made the "nurse thing" even worse for her, then cleaned and returned under the bedlinens for her to sleep on that night. Soon just the mention of "rubber" in any way made her cry pathetically and she would strive to stay as far from the material as she could and getting her to wear her raincape was a real circus. This the nurse accomplished by tickling Alice severely and thereafter, the mere threat of such a tickling got Alice to let the hated garment be put on her.

As a result of this, Alice began to have fantastic dreams, that lasted for the rest of her life, that she told her neighbors about. One denizen of thses, often nightmares, was a person called "the Red Queen" who seems to be the scolding Nurse and did nasty things to her with all the feelings that this involved. Because of the rather delicately feminine nature of this, she only told the details of her dreams to other ladies who kind of tittered and found it cutely bawdy in a classy way and thought it suggested a badly-behaved child taking out her frustrations at being chastized and trained on her elders. Because they were told only to ladies, the truely horrible nature of what the dreams were did not make it into the catalog of "Alice" stories, which consisted of many of the stories she told her neighbor, which were then slightly redoned, edited and put into two volumes.

There is another volume said to exist, supposedly written by Cassandra Austen, Jane's sister, and said to be so scandalous that Cassandra was never spoken of as a writer. It is said to be some of the tales told by Alice and simply titled The Red Queen. This is quite impossible since Canssandra's dates are 1773-1845 and this volume is said to be from 1883. What is suspected is that, for a number of reasons: the scandalous nature of the stories, the horrific nature of what was done to her and her need to distance herself from all of this, Alice wrote them in an "as told to" and simply picked Jane Austen's lesser known sister.

I learned more later on. The Lydell's were so imnpressed with the effect that "The Red Queen" had on Alice that they got much more of this smooth material and used it to make several sets of undergarments; about a half dozen each for all their girls to be worn as part of punishment. On the day of her chastizement, the girl was dressed in the morning with this material under her clothes, or if the chastzement was to be severe, only in these undertings, panties, camisole and underslip, the inside of all these garments were powdered to keep them from sticking and allow them to rub on the girl's body to create feelings all through the day. Also Nurse or Mum would occasionally massage the girl in a playful manner. Shortly before bedtime the girl would be laid down, her skirts gotten under or lifted and slowly massaged on her "flower" until the inevitable, often this caused some wetting. This led to two names for this material: "Rubber" for the way it was used and "French silk" for its origin As the Lydells told others. anything made of this was called "French", like "French Panties", a "French camisole" or a "Frnech Slip". This so fit the sensibilities of the time in terms of finding an alternative to spanking for little girls that it became popular in the Lydells' circle and known as "French chastzement" or just "Frenching". Another impressive effect of this material was how it made a girl pay attention to her chastity. Upon learing that the French had Rubber Nursing. This group of families sought and hired one of these; a lady name Estelle Marie Cornoier ("Corn-wy-ay" often mis-pronounced as "ca-noy-a"). This has been one of England's best kept secrets, for a number of reasons: National pride, the scandalous implication, the horrific nature of this chastizement and guilt about enjoying the pleasant, smooth feel of the material to the hand as this was being done, being chief among them.

when I was 10 years old I visited England with my mother and met one of her extanded family by marriage. Lady Alice Cassandra Worthingham-Liddell. a descendent of Alice's siter. Since she knew about me and rubber, wanted to make an impression on me and have some fun with me, she showed me the rubber sheet and said, it was used on Alice and told stories in great detail of how this was don to engage my attention. I just had to have it: Just think of what Sandra would say! Then; miracle of miracles, she gave it to me. I kept it in my room and treated it carefully since it was very old and starting to deteriorate. I would run my hands across it and think of Alice getting her daily wetsy and Sandra thought it was a treasure to have. When I was going on 16, Rubber Fairy noticed it, asked me about it and I told her. She took it to Lady Truthfinder as well as went through her records and found that the story was true and I had a piece of real memorabilia. She alos noted that it was starting to deteriorate and told me she could fix it and make it like new which she did. We named it The Red Queen and at every Rubber Nursing school I attended, having and displaying this added to my status.

Now you may ask "What it is doing in Christine's rubber nursery, where this picture was made?" As a part-Fairy Little Girl. she is in some ways beyond her years and the equivalent of a 6-1/2 year old. Well, she knows all about Alice so having something that was used on that little girl used on her just adds to all the feelings she gets. It is put to bed with her and her dollies know what to do to make sure she is very aware of its presence, and this also serves to attract the girls who like to feel rubber and touch a real piece of little girl legendary history to her and use it on her. Andrea Lynne and two or three other girls like to "play Alice" with Christine and the "story" never has a hppy ending for our "Little Alice"

Since this probably first classic rubber sheet is part of the life of one of the ultimate little girls of the world, it has two reasons for being in, and is the lead item in the Rubber Panty Hall of fame.
