BABY DIAPERS

Diapering babies is very different from diapeing Little Girls. It is a good bet that if a Little Girl is in diapers, it will be pretty much permanent or for a good long time so you want a diaper that can be used over many years which means one that can be size-adjusted. With babies, you will use the diaper for other things like burp cloths, cleaning and things like that, so you want the baby diaper to be versatile and usable for other things like burp cloths, cleaing cloths or protecting where baby sits or lays against minor accidents. For a Little Girl, it will be pretty much used only as a diaper. For this reason, when we diaper a girl 4 or older, we use our T-Diaper. Under that age we use baby diapers.

One thing to know, with a baby, you will need many more diapers than with a Little Girl. Because with babies, diapers are often used for other things, avoid things like pocket diapers. Also avoid diaper inserts and "soaker pads", instead, double or triple diaper by laying the two or three diapers one on top of the other and folking as if they wer one. This prevents bunching up of material and uneven thickness which can hold wetness against Baby's body instead of letting it move away. We also do not recommend pre-folds or contour diapers of any kind since they are less versatile. We recommend flat diapers. They come in two sized, 27 x 27 and 21 x 40

Another thing to stay away from are the all-in-ones. because they are a combination of both diaper and panty, they do not dry as quickly as a diaper and a separate rubber panty and usually have an insert. Also the outer panty part is usually made with some kind of funny cloth and not rubber and that cloth loses its waterproof characteristic after a while. If either the panty or diaper tear, the whole thing is no good and since they are usually sized to fit, when outgrown, they are not useful and you need to replace them with new once of the right size. Also, these are only good as diapers and not versatile. It is impossible to add extra layers as when you double or triple diaper: That smells

MORE ABOUT AVOIDING SOAKER/INSERTS: Soaker/inserts put extra layers of material between the legs.

  • This makes it take longer for the wet or whatever to get away from the body as it has to go through more material
  • It holds the contaminated material mnore tighly against the body Both of these contrubute to irritation of the skin. This is significant since a soaker is usually just a diaper that is foldee lengthwise, either in thirds or quarters. It would not add much more work, if any, to just double or triple diaper. Just lay the diapers on atop the other, fold and pin. This has the same amount of material distributed evenly all over where the diaper goes

What makes this work well is rubber panties. If the wet gets away from Baby's body faster it comes up against the waterproof material in a smaller "spot" and has nowhere to go so it spreads across the outside of the outermost diaper. This means that diapers get wet from the outside in and it wets evenly

Also, not being so tight against the body, this allows air between the body and contaminated material which helps body heat evaporate any wetness that lingers on the body. |This helps baby lotion and baby powder fight diaper rash and lets you go longer between changes
